11 Things NOT to Write in Your Cover Letter

  1. Why you are not qualified—instead focus on why you ARE qualified
Example: Although I have little experience working with Photoshop, I am a quick learner.
  2. Your weaknesses—don't mention these unless you are asked
Example: Working on a team at my last position was very difficult for me, so I look forward to working alone at your company.
  3. To Whom It May Concern—you won't get anyone's attention if you don't know who is supposed to receive your cover letter and resume
  4. Negative comments about previous employers—if you are leaving because you hate your boss, you don't need to announce this in your cover letter
Example: I do not feel comfortable in my current work environment which has led me to seek new employment.
  5. Your salary requirements—it is usually best to wait until the interview to discuss compensation
Example: I am seeking a position that pays between $40,000 and $50,000 with a great benefits package.
  6. That you are willing to do anything—don't sound desperate in your cover letter. Rather, you should sound confident and determined
Example: I have been out of work for six months and I really need a job. I am waiting anxiously by the phone for your call.
  7. Future plans that include you leaving the position for which you are applying—save your impressive career goals for your fiancé's parents
Example: In the future I plan to return to school to work on my ultimate career goal of being a lawyer.
  8. Lies—avoid the awkward moment when you are asked about it and have to make up another lie
Example: I was CEO of Microsoft before leaving the company to take four years off.
  9. What the employer will do for you—emphasize how you will benefit the employer
Example: The experience that working for your company will provide will help me immensely with my career goals.
  10. Personal information—your employer doesn't need to know you height, weight, martial status, children's names, political affiliation, or religion. Leave it out of your cover letter unless it is necessary for consideration.
Example: I returned to school to become a nurse after divorcing my husband.
  11. Strange idioms—you might feel clever, but you don't personally know the person reading your letter. Write a professional, straight-forward letter.
Example: I am the diamond in the rough that you need at your company.
