To Thank or Not to Thank...

Should I send a Thank You Letter after my interview?

You wrote a great cover letter and resume. You said all the right things in your interview. The position and company is a perfect fit with your plans. You've done everything right so far, but now what? Do you just sit back and wait for the job offer?

Not if you really want the job...

The process for getting a job is pretty standard - until you finish your first interview. Many job seekers just sit back and wait for the next phone call. Unfortunately, it doesn't always come. This leads to frustration and the “what did I do wrong” phenomenon. If you really want the job, you need to be proactive. Quit leaving your future in the hands of someone else! Show the employer how much you really want to work for them.

You should always send a thank you letter to your interviewer immediately after your interview. Grandma was right when she said to always say thank you. A thank you letter will accomplish a few things.

First, your thank you letter will remind the interviewer who you are. The company could be interviewing hundreds of people for the position you want. You can bet that almost every person who is invited for a second interview wrote a thank you letter. Make sure to mention something memorable from the interview so the interviewer can start to place your name with your face.

Second, a letter will allow you to write something you forgot to mention in the interview or communicate something that might not have been clear. If you were flustered, you might have forgotten your fantastic example of increasing sales by 100% in your last position. A thank you letter is a great way to tell the company information that didn't come up in the interview.

Third, don't underestimate the value of showing respect for the interviewer and their time. A thank you letter shows them that you realize their time is valuable and they were not required to meet with you. Showing respect can leave a great impression on the person who interviewed you.

Last, a great thank you letter continues the line of communication with the interviewer. If you are still interested in the position, you can mention it in your letter. On the other hand, thanking them for the interview and letting them know that you have already found another position or that you are not interested is helpful for the employer.

So, when should you write a thank you letter? Every time you interview!
