What is a Cover Letter?
If you've just recently discovered that you need to write a cover letter, you're not alone. Everyone knows that they need to have a resume to apply for a job, but it comes as a surprise to many people that they need to send a letter with their resume. So, what is a cover letter?
Simply stated, a cover letter tells the person who is reading your resume why it ended up in their hands. Cover letters are commonly used in business whenever a document is being submitted for review. When the recipient is done reading your resume cover letter, they should know who you are, why they should hire you, and what position you are applying for.
When you write your cover letter, it is very important that you follow the standard business letter format. A poorly written cover letter is almost as bad (if not worse) than not sending a letter at all. Make sure to write the letter to a person and never write ‘to whom it may concern.'
