Write More Letters to Improve Your Job Search

If you are limiting you inventory of job search letters to a cover letter, you are missing out on many opportunities. Send some of the letters below to make your job search more effective.

The first type of letter you might write when looking for a new job is a networking letter. Networking letters, or broadcasting letters, tell people you know that you are back in the job market. Networking with your contacts is very important because it is your best bet at finding a new job quickly. You should send networking letters to your friends, your spouse's friends, former co-workers and supervisors, customers, teachers, and classmates.

When you finally find a position you want, send a cover letter with your resume. A good cover letter tells the recipient why you are sending them your resume, what qualifies you for the available position, and how they can contact you for an interview.

If you are selected for an interview, do not underestimate the value of sending a thank you letter or follow-up letter within a few days of meeting with the interviewer. Thank you letters allow you to make contact with the interviewer again to tell them that you are still interested (or no longer interested) in the position. They also give you a chance to tell the interviewer anything you didn't emphasize enough or want to reemphasize. Employers expect this letter, so don't forget to mail one! Let the interviewer know you are really interested!

Once you have been offered a job, you need to decide if you want to accept it or reject it. After considering the position, company, salary and benefits, you should type an acceptance of offer or rejection of offer letter. Accepting an offer with a letter gives you the chance to specify your understanding of the terms of employment in writing. This may prove useful in the future if a question arises over these terms. If you are rejecting the offer, it is also useful to do so in writing with reasons why you are rejecting the offer. Be polite to keep the door open for future opportunities.

If you are not offered the position, you may want to write a letter to respond to the rejection. Show the interviewer you are thankful for their time and consideration and let him or her know that you are still interested in the position if plans change.

Once you have accepted a new position, you should write a resignation letter to your former employer. This letter is usually required by employers for your human resources file. Tell them why you are leaving and when your last day will be. Keep in mind that many companies require a two-week notice. If you will not be able to honor this request, explain why in this letter and ask for permission to leave sooner. You never know when you might need to come back so it is a good idea not to hurt the relationship with your former employer.
